After activating MMS, the only iPhone 3.0 feature I was missing was tethering. A couple of days ago I was finally able to get it working.(1)
Google had sent me to this site a while back, but it didn’t have any profiles for mainland China.
After dead ends elswhere, though, I decided to try using the above site to create a profile.
I clicked(2) on “Mobileconfigs… create” and entered the following settings (I left the rest of the settings blank):

Mobile Internet
APN: cmnet
Tethering: On
—
Then I clicked on “GENERATE!”. It asked me to accept, I did, and then the tethering option was available in Settings–>General–>Network–>Internet Tethering.
So tethering now works, but I haven’t yet had the need to use either it or MMS. At least they work…
(1) Try this at your own risk. It worked for me, but your phone might explode. Also, I assume it only works with an iPhone 3G or 3GS (although it doesn’t need a 3G network, because I’m using China Mobile’s Edge(?) network).
(2) I guess “clicked” is the wrong metaphor, but “touched” doesn’t seem right either.

Tested it myself here in Guangzhou. Works perfectly. Though you have to be careful about usage since there’s no unlimited service available. But it’s great for emergency situations where the iPhone just isn’t enough and you have to use your laptop.
I think think of many times where the land line is down but my phone still can get online. So I can use it to receive orders and send do emails.

Forest: Thanks for sharing the alternate proxy setting. I’ve been able to send MMS without the 8080, but maybe adding it would help with the reliability issues some have been having.

Just ignore my previous comment. It works now :). I tried to slide the on/off button. Safari takes tounch, doesn’t recognize sliding

Thanks for this well documented and useful site. I am currently having some problems with a 3GS in Hong Kong, with China Mobile / People as providers.
I have downloaded the applications, selected HK and CM, but that’s where problems start :
i. After installing the application, I cannot connect to the internet using CM; to do so, I’d have to delete the application and input in Settings/AP “peoples.com”.
ii. What am I supposed to do to tether to the net once the application is installed and the country/provider have been selected ?
